Overview

Better glutes need more targeted training.

Many people spend most of their glute training on squats, deadlifts and compound lifts, and overlook one of the glutes' most important jobs: hip extension. The gluteus maximus is a key hip extensor and the muscle that most shapes the size and contour of the glutes.

The hip thrust is a strength exercise built around hip extension. With consistent, well-planned resistance, it develops gluteus maximus strength and lays the training foundation for glute growth and shape.

A traditional hip thrust needs a bench, barbell, plates and a pad. Setup takes time and space. The Portable Hip Thrust Trainer combines upper-back support, a dedicated foot platform, hip resistance and a portable frame, so you can thrust in one compact station.

Its band resistance system loads the hip extension while your body stays well supported, so you can actively drive with your glutes. From learning your first hip thrust to advanced gluteus maximus strength work, you set the intensity to match your ability.

Less setup. More focus on the glutes.

Six core training functions

Six ways it's built for hip extension.

  1. 01TARGETED GLUTEUS MAXIMUS TRAINING

    Targeted gluteus maximus training

The gluteus maximus is one of the body's main hip extensors. In a hip thrust, you contract the glutes to drive the hips from flexion to near neutral. The trainer gives this movement dedicated support and resistance, so you can focus on hip extension.

With the right range of motion and progressive resistance, it builds gluteus maximus strength and size. Every thrust has a clear target.

  2. 02ADJUSTABLE RESISTANCE

    Adjustable band resistance

Bands attach to the frame to give adjustable resistance through hip extension. Choose a band setup for your level and add load as your technique improves. Band tension usually rises as it stretches, giving a different feel from a loaded barbell.

From foundations to advanced work, intensity that matches your ability.

  3. 03STABLE UPPER-BACK SUPPORT

    Stable upper-back support

A traditional hip thrust means finding a bench at the right height and keeping it from sliding. The trainer's dedicated pad gives your upper back a stable contact point. Set your shoulders, pelvis and feet to find a position that suits your proportions, with fewer corrections from an unstable bench.

    Steadier support. Easier control.

  4. 04DEDICATED FOOT PLATFORM

    Dedicated foot platform

The hip thrust is a hip movement, but your feet carry the support. Foot position and knee angle change your posture and which muscles work. The platform gives your feet a defined place, adjustable for height, leg length and comfort.

Stable feet make the hips easier to control.

  5. 05HIP EXTENSION CONTROL

    Less lower-back compensation

Some people lift higher by flaring the rib cage, over-arching the lower back or losing pelvic control. That rarely improves glute training. The back support and hip resistance help you sense your position and extend the hips while the trunk stays steady.

Let the hips do the moving. Let the trunk do the stabilising.

  6. 06GLUTE SHAPING & PROGRESSION

    Glute shaping and progression

Add it to a structured glute and leg programme alongside squats, Romanian deadlifts, hip abduction and single-leg work. As you get stronger, increase resistance, sets and control to keep progressing the load on the gluteus maximus.

Start with glute strength for fuller, firmer, more defined glutes.

The science

Why the hip thrust matters for glute training

Glute shape depends on gluteus maximus strength.

The gluteus maximus is one of the largest muscles in the glutes. Its main job is hip extension, and it also helps rotate the hip and control movement. Standing up from a bend, climbing stairs, sprinting and hip thrusting all rely on it.

The hip thrust trains the gluteus maximus through a clear hip extension. Compared with the squat, which also needs a large range at the knee, it usually lets you focus more on extending the hip.

That doesn't mean it replaces every glute and leg exercise. Effective glute shaping combines the hip thrust with other proven strength exercises to suit your goals.

The trainer makes this targeted hip extension work easier to set up, schedule and keep doing.

Recommended exercises

Four hip thrusts, from foundation to advanced.

  1. 01

    BILATERAL HIP THRUST

    Bilateral hip thrust

Feet set on the platform, upper back on the pad, extend the hips slowly. For learning hip thrust technique and building gluteus maximus strength.

  2. 02

    BANDED HIP THRUST

    Banded hip thrust

With the bands correctly attached, drive the hips into extension. Add resistance step by step as your ability grows.

  3. 03

    PEAK CONTRACTION CONTROL

    Peak contraction control

Pause briefly as the hips reach near neutral and actively squeeze the glutes. Don't add range by leaning back or arching the lower back.

  4. 04

    SINGLE-LEG HIP THRUST

    Single-leg hip thrust

Once you have base strength and pelvic control, try the single-leg version. Focus on pelvic stability, one-sided hip extension and left-right balance. Start light, with a coach if needed.

Choose exercises and resistance to suit your ability. Start without load the first time.

Design

Every part is built around the way you train.

01

Upper-back pad

A dedicated support point for the upper back that keeps you stable through the thrust.

02

Hip resistance pad

Applies band resistance at the right point on the hips and spreads contact pressure for a more comfortable set.

03

Band resistance system

Bands and frame anchor points provide external resistance for hip extension, in combinations for different intensities.

04

Foot platform

A defined place for your feet that helps you set a stable stance.

05

Metal frame

Joins the back support, foot platform and resistance anchors into one hip thrust station.

06

Portable storage

Folds or breaks down for storage according to its design, so it doesn't take over your space. Suits training spaces of any size.

Why choose it

Don't let setup get in the way of training.

A traditional hip thrust needs a bench, barbell, plates and a hip pad, which isn't always practical in a small studio or at home. The trainer puts support and resistance in one station, so hip thrusts are easy to fit in.

  • Simpler setup

Less reliance on separate pieces of equipment.

  • Flexible resistance

Set band resistance to match your programme.

  • Clear support

The back pad and foot platform give the hip thrust a dedicated position.

  • Space-efficient

Portable storage for home gyms, private studios and small classes.

  • Easy progression

Add resistance and refine control to make the hip thrust part of your long-term plan.

How to use

Six steps to a better hip thrust.

  1. 1

    Check the equipment

Place it on flat, solid ground. Check the frame, anchor points, back pad, foot platform and bands.

  2. 2

    Set your position

Rest your upper back on the pad and place your feet on the platform. Adjust your stance for your height and leg length.

  3. 3

    Set the resistance

Choose a band setup for your ability. Make sure attachments are secure and both sides are even.

  4. 4

    Start position

Bend at the hips and knees, breathe naturally and brace your trunk. Don't arch your lower back.

  5. 5

    Drive the hips

Press through steady feet, squeeze the glutes and lift the pelvis under control. Near neutral, don't lean back to gain height.

  6. 6

    Lower slowly

Lower under control so the glutes stay working through a full, comfortable range. Add resistance once the movement is steady.

Beginners should master the unloaded hip thrust before adding resistance, with a coach if needed.

FAQ

Before you buy.

Does the hip thrust really help lift the glutes?

The hip thrust is an effective gluteus maximus strength exercise. With enough intensity, sensible volume and long-term progressive overload, it builds glute muscle and a base for a better shape.

Results depend on body fat, starting muscle, your programme, nutrition and recovery.

Hip thrust or squat: which is better for glutes?

Both train the glutes, in different ways. The hip thrust emphasises hip extension; the squat also needs a large range at the knee. To build the gluteus maximus, combine them rather than choosing one.

How is a banded hip thrust different from a barbell one?

A barbell loads you with weight; a band's tension changes as it stretches. They feel different, so choose by goal, ability and equipment.

Why is there a back pad?

The hip thrust needs upper-back support so you can move around the hip. The pad gives a clear contact point for comfort and consistent reps.

Will it stop my lower back from working at all?

No. Your back and trunk muscles still stabilise you. The goal is for the hips to do the moving and to avoid over-arching the lower back, not to switch the back off.

Can I use it at home?

Yes, following the instructions, on flat ground with enough space and secure attachments. Beginners should master the unloaded movement before adding resistance.

Is there instruction after I buy?

Yes. Contact the Academy when your trainer arrives to get the video course, covering unboxing and assembly, basic hip thrusts, single-leg hip thrusts and banded hip thrusts.

Send training videos regularly so a coach can help refine your technique.

Is it suitable for coaches?

Yes, for teaching the hip thrust, specialised gluteus maximus strength work and related classes. Coaches can tailor programmes to each client's build, strength, technique and goals.

STRONGER GLUTES. SMARTER TRAINING.

Stronger glutes. Training with method.

Glute shaping takes time, and the right method. From stable support to controlled hip extension to steadily increasing load, every quality rep builds glute strength.

Portable Hip Thrust Trainer: professional glute training within reach.

Ready to train with more control?

This is fitness equipment, not a medical, rehabilitation or treatment device. Before use, check the frame, bands and attachments as instructed. Avoid overloading, band failure and incorrect body support. Results vary with the individual and the programme.
